Epigenetics is defined as inherited changes in gene expression that are not encoded in the DNA sequence. The major epigenetic mechanisms are DNA methylation, post-translational histone modifications, RNA interference and microRNAs. Unlike classical genetics the epigenetic signature is dynamic changing with age and is influenced by environmental factors such as diet, illness, smoking and alcohol consumption. The importance of epigenetics in developmental programmes and carcinogenesis has been clearly established however its role in common age-related inflammatory and infectious is still largely unknown, and therapeutic avenues remain underdeveloped.

This network, part of the University´s interdisciplinary `Healthcare Across the Disciplines´ theme, will establish a major cross-faculty initiative in epigenetics. It will examine the role of age-related epigenetic change in relation to the immune and endocrine systems. The students and supervisors within the network will have monthly meetings and will attend and present their data at their academic unit lab meeting. The students will attend the regular seminar series within their Department and will present at the annual Departmental and Medical School Research meetings and at cross faculty meetings organised by the Krebs Institute. A network of three PhD scholarships is being funded by the University for 3 years, providing a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011-12), UK/EU fees and a research training grant of £1,000 p.a.

PhD Environmental Scholarships Student in Ore Geology

CAMM – Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (www.camm.se) is a recently established centre of excellence, based on strategic funds from the Swedish government within the strategic area Sustainable use of natural resources: mining and minerals at Luleå University of Technology. One of the CAMM work packages is dedicated to the emerging field of geometallurgy that brings together geological sciences, mineral processing and metallurgy in order to characterize physical and chemical properties of rocks and ore from the in situ ore stage through the extraction and beneficiation stages to the final product. The aim is to optimize processes, minimize waste and reduce costs in the mine to mill operation.

We are looking for a PhD student in Ore Geology with focus on ore characterization. The PhD-project will comprise petrology and mineralogy in a detailed deposit study in the Skellefte VMS District. The character of the ore will be documented in terms of metal content, mineral associations, metal distribution etc, using geometallurgical and mineralogical techniques (e.g. hypespectral methods, XRD, SEM-WDS, Laser Ablation ICPMS). Results will have to be prepared for use within the larger framework of geometallurgical modelling to provide a base for predicting mineral process performance and mine planning considering the geological variability of the ore. The project is part of the geometallurgy work package of CAMM.

Fieldwork and drillcore logging in the deposit area will be an important part of the study and therefore experience from drillcore- and bedrock mapping is a merit.

Ore Geology belongs to the Division of Geosciences, being part of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering with about 280 employees (http://www.ltu.se/tkg?l=en). As a PhD student, you will be involved in teaching in the geology-related programs of the department.

Qualifications

Applicants must have excellent academic credentials and recently completed their M.Sc or equivalent degree in Geosciences with specializations in mineralogy and petrology, and be admitted for post graduate studies. The applicants must possess good skills in written and spoken English.

The Laboratory for High Energy Physics at the University of Bern, Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics, has an opening for a PhD Student Position in Experimental High Energy Physics, duration 3 years (extendable 1 year), starting 1st January 2011.

The position will be in the framework of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, which is currently taking data from proton-proton collisions.

Our group is active in the ATLAS trigger and data acquisition, the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model and we are also preparing for the upcoming ATLAS detector upgrades. In addition, we are operating a Grid-computing centre (Tier-3) for the analysis of ATLAS data in Bern.

The candidate for this position is expected to play an active role in the activities of our group, in particular in the analysis of the now available collision data. The candidate should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics and knowledge in the field of elementary particle physics. Knowledge of LINUX and C++/object-oriented programming is desirable. Knowledge of the ATLAS software framework will be an asset.

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) announce the Abe Fellowship for Journalists (AFJ). Funding for the fellowship is provided by CGP.

The Purpose of the Fellowship

The Abe Fellowship for Journalists is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects.

The Fellowship Research Agenda

Applicants are invited to submit proposals on one of the three themes below.

1) Traditional and non-traditional approaches to security and diplomacy: Appropriate research topics include transnational terrorism, internal ethnic and religious strife, infectious diseases, food safety, climate change, and non-proliferation, as well as the role of cultural initiatives in peace-building.

2) Global and regional economic issues: Suitable topics include regional and bilateral trade arrangements, globalization and the mitigation of its adverse consequences, sustainable urbanization, and environmental degradation.

3) The role of civil society: Appropriate issues include demographic change, immigration, the role of NPOs and NGOs as champions of the public interest, social enterprise, and corporate social responsibility.

Policy Relevance

The Program defines policy-relevant research as the study of existing public policies for the purpose of: a) deepening understanding of those policies and their consequences; and b) formulating more effective policies. Policy-relevance also pertains to the public dialogue on contemporary social issues.

Eligibility

•The AFJ competition is open to citizens of the United States and Japan with at least five years of professional journalistic experience in newspapers, newsmagazines, wire services, and on-line news organizations. Freelancers are also eligible. Nationals of other countries must be permanent residents of the United States or Japan, or have a long-term affiliation with the American or Japanese journalistic communities.
•U.S.-based applicants with no previous journalistic employment in Japan have priority; Japan-based applicants with no previous journalistic employment in the United States have priority.
•Proposals must be non-partisan.

Fellowship awards are contingent upon receipt of funding from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

Fellowship Terms

•Fellows are expected to produce an analytical article or feature story that will inform public debate or a policy community. The Fellow and his/her news organization will decide when to run the article.
•The program provides support for six weeks in Japan or the United States. The term may be divided between the principal destination and another country. For example, for Americans, four weeks in Japan and two weeks in another country in the region, and for Japanese, four weeks in the United States and two weeks in Canada or Mexico.
•The maximum stipend is $23,500, which includes one roundtrip air ticket, $500 to prepare for overseas fieldwork, and support for interpretation based on requests. Fellows may receive salary from their employers, but cannot carry out assignments while on the award.
•Fellows are required to attend the Abe Fellows' Retreat from January 7-10, 2011. The fellowship tenure may begin between April 1 and December 31, 2011.

Hattie Mae Bush Accounting Scholarship 2011

Job Description: This scholarship was established in 1978 by the late A.A. and Hattie Mae Bush, longtime residents of Amarillo. Bush, an accountant and entrepreneur, enjoyed giving a helping hand to younger people.

Eligibility:

• Graduating senior or currently enrolled college student from the 26 northernmost counties of the Texas Panhandle or students currently attending the restricted colleges/universities listed below
• Major in Accounting
• Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA while in college
• Must attend Amarillo College, Texas Tech University, or West Texas A&M University .
Five graduating seniors from Amarillo Independent School District have received
scholarships that will pay for every year of their undergraduate and graduate
education, including a doctorate. Four of the five honorees are ACE students.

Four of this year’s Gates Millennium Scholarship winners are from Palo Duro

DAAD Study Scholarships for Graduates of All Disciplines: Australia

Study scholarships are awarded to provide foreign graduates of all disciplines with opportunities to complete a postgraduate or Master's degree course at a German higher education institution and to gain a degree in Germany (Master's/Diplom).

Duration

Depending on the length of the chosen degree course or study project, the study scholarship will be awarded for between 10 and 24 months. The scholarship cannot be awarded for one semester only. If an applicant accepts the scholarship offer but returns to Australia after one semester, he/she will have to repay the grant. Initially, scholarships are awarded for one academic year and can be extended for students with good study achievements to cover the full length of the chosen degree course.

Amount awarded

The DAAD will pay a monthly award of 715 Euros or, in exceptional cases for applicants holding advanced academic qualifications (e.g. a doctorate/PhD), 975 Euros plus travel and luggage costs and a health insurance allowance. In addition to these payments, the DAAD will pay a study and research allowance and, where appropriate, a rent subsidy and family allowance. Tuition fees cannot be paid by the DAAD.

Eligible candidates

Applications for DAAD study scholarships are open to excellently-qualified graduates who, at the latest when they commence their scholarship-supported studies, hold a first degree (Bachelor's, Diplom or comparable academic degree). Doctoral candidates cannot be considered for this program. The DAAD "Research Grant" program is available for such candidates. Besides previous academic achievements, the most important selection criterion is a convincing presentation of the applicant's academic and personal reasons for the planned study project in Germany.

Applications must either include the notification of admission issued by the German host institution for the desired degree course, or, if this is not the case, then the notification of admission must be presented to the DAAD before the scholarship-supported studies begin. The scholarship award letter from the DAAD only becomes effective once the holder has been admitted to studies.

Good German language skills - especially for applicants reading arts and humanities disciplines - are generally a requirement for studying in Germany. Exceptions are possible when scholarship holders are enrolled in degree courses which are instructed in English. The DAAD may fund attendance of a German language course at a language school in Germany before the scholarship-supported studies begin. This is free of charge to the scholarship holder. Applicants who will already have been in Germany for more than two years at the time they begin the scholarship-supported studies cannot be considered.

The ASEAN Scholarships for The Philippines is tenable for 4 years leading to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced (GCE A-Level) (or equivalent) certificate.

The Scholarship is for studies in selected Singapore schools from Secondary Three to Pre-University Two and is renewed annually, subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.

* Graduates with a first class honours degree or an upper second class honours issued by the University of Glamorgan or Polytechnic of Wales may apply for a scholarship totaling £2,000.
* Graduates from other Universities may apply for a scholarship totaling £1,500.
* Successful scholarship applicants will be informed once they have accepted a place on an eligible course. As these scholarships will be granted on a first-come first-served basis, applicants are advised to confirm their place on an eligible course as soon as possible.
* Scholarship applications may be submitted prior to the announcement of degree results but the scholarship will only be confirmed following acceptance by the student of a place on an eligible course, and provision of suitable evidence clearly demonstrating their first class or upper second class honours degree.
* Students with qualifications from outside of the UK will be dealt with on an individual basis.
* To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must have a first class honours degree or an upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification. Equivalence will be determined by the University of Glamorgan whose decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
* Students repeating a course at the University of Glamorgan will not be eligible for a scholarship. (Students granted mitigating circumstances by the University will be considered on an individual basis).
* Students who have previously received any payment from a University of Glamorgan postgraduate scholarship, will not be eligible to apply for another scholarship to study a different eligible course.
* These scholarships are not payable with any other form of support from public funds e.g. directly from any other Welsh Assembly Government initiative or objective one funding.

Do not add documents that have not been requested. There are many scholarship guides in the press that encourage you to add additional materials as a way for you to show your creativity and make your application unique. Judging by the available data, if you create an error-free, neat and timely application package, you will have already distinguished your application as unique. Additional materials:

	Give the impression that you think the funders don't really know what they need;
	Can disqualify you in some competitions;
	Makes your application more difficult to manage and consequently more likely to be eliminated.

Some advice givers swear by the "additional material" strategy. We don't. You are better served by focusing on making your application shine, using the structure requested by the funder.

Do not staple documents together unless directed to do so. It is always reasonable to use paper clips to keep materials tidy. Do not place the application in a special folder unless directed to do so. The place to be creative and innovative is in the preparation of your essay. When preparing the applications, just follow the directions you are given.

Make a complete copy of the application before you send it. Don't skip the transcript or the financial aid statement because you know those are included; it is always important to have a complete record of everything you send the funder in exactly the form it was received by the funder. Use an envelope that will hold your application without folding it. As a matter of presentation, the application will look better without creases. Send the application "return receipt requested" or use a delivery service like FedEx that allows you to track the package's path and verify who signed for it. In this way you will have proof that the application was received by the organization. If you do not receive verification within the appropriate length of time, follow up. You won't have a chance at the scholarship if the application never makes it to the in-box.
